Artist Statement
What is a portrait?
Years ago, I first thought a portrait was nothing more than a plain headshot of a person, a row of photographs identifying a chain of command, doctor profiles, or basic school portraits for family walls. Nothing spectacular or special, just something nice to give to the grandparents.
Over time my opinion has changed, even on the basic “traditional” portrait.
I try to capture the personality of my clients. I want them to see their authentic self. My hope is that they see the beauty I see in them. Sometimes it isn’t even about capturing their personality but waiting for that second when they become vulnerable and let you peek inside their soul and see their reality. Portraits of my clients leave me longing to tell their stories.
To create a place for them to time travel in their memories aided by photographs and antidotes to tell their children and grandchildren about.
When I look at a portrait now, I see more than just an image. Now I see the depth of a person, someone I want to get to know more. A moment captured in time. A chance to look back at growth and change. A portrait is a split second of your life of where you are at that very juncture. There is a reason you are freezing this moment in time.
Let’s photograph a work of art that you can look back on and pass down to the next generation.
The time is never better than now to celebrate you and your family.

Muddy Girl
When a father looks at “Muddy Girl”, does he laugh when they see the frustration on a child’s face and recall that same look on his own child years ago when something didn’t go as planned? Does he remember how they cared for their once four-year-old, now sixteen, who doesn’t need his help anymore? Does it bring a warm smile to his face, maybe followed by a hint of sadness about their baby growing up? How does it make you feel?
Kaleidoscope Eyes
“Kaleidoscope Eyes” caught me by surprise when the setting sun lit these 17-year-old eyes up. This piece captures all sides of this young girl; the fact that she lets me photograph her says a lot. A girl who used to wear all black, now with a vibrant blue shirt and eyes out of this world. Her expression leaves her essence behind her past, present, and future.
